Svenja Sommer Reboots Ambassador

Svenja Sommer

Do not underestimate the importance of "regeneration" for athletic performance - both on a physical and psychological level.

"Summer in the Inside" is not only Svenja's favorite recovery track, but it also actually describes her outlook on life. For the middle-distance runner, there's nothing better than training in "warm" weather and then swimming in the lake.

When Svenja is not at the university or pushing through training sessions, she still enjoys being active and also channels her energy as a content creator. She reveals what type of content she prefers to create in the following lines.
And who knows: Maybe it will work out to capture a snapshot or two with her great sporting role model. ;)

Svenja in the Interview

1. What sport do you do and how did you get into it?

I am a middle-distance runner competing in the 1500m and 800m events. Originally, gymnastics was my main sport. It was there that I noticed I could actually run quite well :) At about 8 years old, I joined the athletics group of my hometown club. Gradually, my focus shifted from gymnastics to athletics. Initially, I experimented a bit - from sprinting, to (long) hurdles, to long jump, I enjoyed doing various disciplines... I just never really warmed up to the throwing events. At the age of 17, it became clear that I was best suited for middle-distance running :)

2. What makes your sport special?

I think many runners would agree that hard tempo runs are a true love-hate relationship. The training is very demanding and tough, but at the same time, it creates a great incentive. Overcoming one's inner resistance time and again, and pushing through the session despite tired legs and bad weather, I think trains much more than just fast running: namely perseverance, tenacity, willpower, and much more. And the best part is: when it's done, you feel great.

3. What has been your greatest sporting achievement so far?

After achieving 4th and 5th place in the German Championships in the 800m and 1500m during my youth, I have now landed in sixth place in the indoor season 2024 among the adults. Additionally, I have already won several medals at the South German Championships.

4. How do you deal with the "hole" after a big competition?

I give myself a small window of time in which I allow myself a brief transition phase. Then, however, it is important for me to quickly set a new goal (e.g., a competition) to work towards. This increases motivation and focus.

5. What is your favorite hobby besides your sport?

In addition to my main sport, I actually love trying out other sports: tennis, volleyball, basketball, dancing, cycling, hiking, spikeball, and much more. Through my sports studies, I have also come into contact with many different sports.

Outside of sports, I love creatively decorating different types of bowls (and then, of course, sharing them on Instagram. Content creation in general is a lot of fun for me.

Fun Facts

Which song do you like to listen to most during recovery?
That changes very often. But what always works is "Summer on the inside."

With which person would you like to swap a day? Why?
I would be very interested in Sifan Hassan's training routine. She is an absolute professional, and I could certainly pick up some tips from her.

Who is your greatest role model and why?
In general, all athletes who fight their way back to the top of the world after major setbacks.

What is your hidden talent?
I think I'm quite good at multitasking. (haha)

We're just among ourselves here: Tell us a fun fact about yourself that no one knows yet!
My last name is "Sommer"... and that seems to have made its way into my DNA. I love everything related to summer: warm weather (preferably >30C, even during training), swimming lakes, iiiice cream....

Everything about Recovery

1. What does perfect regeneration look like for you?

The perfect regeneration for me is feasible from anywhere, without dependence on other people (e.g., physiotherapists), and without great effort and pain.

2. When do you prefer to use your Reboots?

Before and after training as well as competition. To loosen up my muscles a bit before training and competition, I like to use the Reboots about 1 hour before starting. Here, I choose a rather lower intensity level. After training or competition, I use the Reboots for recovery, also gladly at high intensity levels.

3. How important is the topic of "regeneration" to you?

Regeneration is very central to me. With two training sessions a day, I rely on recovering as well and as quickly as possible. Otherwise, I cannot complete my sessions as desired.

4. What are your top 3 tips and tricks for preparing for training and subsequent recovery?

1. Align nutrition and fluid intake in the last few hours before training well with the training. Training with hunger or a very full stomach is not much fun.
2. Look at the session before training and mentally prepare for it... as well as tune in with your favorite motivational playlist :)
3. Take sufficient time for cooldown and recovery-promoting measures to keep muscle soreness, etc., as minimal as possible

5. What are you doing while you are in the Reboots?

Quite different - when I'm in company, I like to chat. Otherwise, I often eat during that time, scroll a bit on social media, or answer my messages and emails. Sometimes I just relax a bit.

6. What does an ideal day look like for you?

Sunshine and >30 C° of course :) I would sleep in until about 8:30 a.m. and then start the day with an easy run on the beach with my running buddies. After that, we would prepare a delicious smoothie bowl. Then we would head to the beach. In the afternoon, we would do a track workout and then go to a delicious bowl restaurant. In the evening, we would watch the sunset on the beach.
